SOLDERING HINTS FOR ALUMINUM AND OTHER DIFFICULT METALS
USING SOLDER-IT PASTES

1.  Prepare the metal to be soldered by cleaning thoroughly with a steel brush, steel wool, or other abrasive or solvent.  This is not necessary in all cases but is always a good practice.

2.  Apply the appropriate Solder-It Paste to the joint or crack.  If you are making a large joint or repair, solder in small sections.

3.  MOST IMPORTANT STEP**  Apply heat aggressively around the joint being careful not to heat the Solder-It Paste directly UNTIL you see the paste (actually the flux in the paste) begin to bubble (about 380F).  When you see it bubble, apply the flame directly on the paste just until the solder flows.  Remove heat immediately.

4.  If making a long joint, the above procedure will have "tacked" the joint in a spot or two.  You can now go back and fill in.

5.  When joint is finished, clean residue flux with warm water or solvent.

**  HERE'S WHY:  The flux in the Solder-It Paste is what cleans and prepares the metals to be soldered.  Thus, you do not want that solder to flow until the flux has done its job.  If the solder particles flow BEFORE the flux bubbles, the solder will (in many cases) ball up and roll away.
